GOWRIE – Raymond J. Norine, 92, died Monday, July 11, at Friendship Haven, Fort Dodge.
Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 26, 2022 (NOTE THE DATE) at Zion Lutheran Church,
Gowrie, with Pastor Denise Berns officiating. A visitation will be 1 PM until the start of the service at the
church. Private family burial will be at Gowrie Township Cemetery. Memorials may be left to family
discretion. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie, is in charge of arrangements.
Ray is survived by five children: Gregg (Martha) Norine, Gowrie; Ron (Bernita) Norine, Fort Dodge;
Shelley VanZelderen, Scranton; Brian (Karen) Norine, formerly Rockwell City; and Lori (Rick) Peterson,
Cottonwood AZ. Also 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren with one more on the way, and brother
Russ Norine, Friendship Haven. He was preceded in death by his parents Albin and Hannah Norine; wife
Phyllis Norine (2007); sisters Helen Magnusson and Florence Targgart; and son-in-law Cornelius “Case”
VanZelderen.
Ray was born July 5, 1930, in Gowrie. He was raised and educated in Gowrie, graduating from Gowrie
High School in 1948. He attended one year at Fort Dodge Junior College and one year at the Art Institute
of Chicago. He married Phyllis Richardson of Dayton on Sept. 15, 1950, and the couple established their
home in Gowrie. Among his jobs, Ray was employed by the Gowrie bank, Johnson Lumber Co. and
Wendell Electric. In 1972 he and Phyllis opened Norine’s Variety Store in Gowrie, which they owned and
operated until retiring in 1995.
Ray was very active in the community, including the Gowrie Historical Society, and at Zion Lutheran. He
was an avid golfer, a lifelong Cubs fan, and a handyman who spent countless hours helping his grown
children and others in the community.
